Do you think this pattern is suitable for beginners? I'm a bit new to knitting and don't always understand the directions of patterns, although I tend to figure it out. I've cabled before, but I'm not sure how difficult this project will be! The hats look beautiful and I would love to make one.

Julia, what a beautiful pattern. I fell in love with it at first sight, purchased it and am now making my 6th version of it! I have used the Rialto Chunky yarn which is wonderful and am currently trying it with Lion Brand Alpine Wool, which is bulkier but I'm hoping for a fuller result. As a beginner I struggled at first with picking up the stitches from the band, but have conquered that technique and am now very comfortable with it. I like to pick up 100 stitches (or a multiple of 5) using a circular needle, only transferring to DPN's when it becomes absolutely necessary due to the decreasing size. My only concern is that the pleats, or puckers, don't seem to fall as nicely as yours! Nevertheless I will continue making this hat and improving my technique as I go. Thank you so much!

Oops - hit done before I had finished! I have no idea what ply the wool is you are referring to - would it be 12 ply??

That's probably correct. I just googled chunky weight yard and Lion Brand had a 13 ply as a chunky.

Would I be able to use a circular needle until it get tight and then switch to DPS? This is a beautiful and I WANT it. :)

Thanks for your comment. You could use a short circular then switch to DPN's.

Hi. I never use DPN's anymore. I use a long circular needle and use the magic loop method. It's so much easier and less fiddle.

This is a great pattern. Being able to adjust the size to fit your head is something most patterns don't offer. I appreciate the creator answering my questions so rapidly. I love the end result and have gotten many compliments on the hat. I will definitely make more.

I'm in the process of knitting this hat. This is my first time knitting cables and the pattern is very straightforward and easy. Its turning out great! I will definitely make more in different colors - very quick knit. Thanks!

does this hat take ALL those balls of yarn listed, or just select one?

It looks like it's a listing of the 4 different hats. I'd select just one of the bullets and purchase the 2 or 3 balls listed.

Cathi's right - this is 4 different suggestions for yarn that will work. One of them, the DB Donegal Tweed Aran, requires that you knit with two strands held together as though they were one; the other three are single strand. Choose of the four options, or another bulky yarn that knits up at 3.5 stitches per inch.

Thank you for commenting. I originally listed all the yarn types used for the four different colours shown in the image. I have now updated the detail to make this more obvious. Hope this helps.

I'm about to buy this pattern and I was wondering if you have used the magic loop method and if so how was it?

Thank you for commenting. I have not used the magic loop method so I'm not able to say if it will work on this project.
