Basic Skills Necessary:

  • provisional cast-on
  • pick up stitches
  • yo, ssk, k2tog, slip 1 k2tog pass the slipped st over
  • attaching an edging
  • add beads with a crochet hook

Pattern Description:

Troldhaugen is a triangular top-down shawl with beads, nupps, and a true lace edging. It's named for Edvard Grieg's piano piece "Wedding Day at Troldhaugen" from Lyric Pieces. In white it would make a lovely wedding shawl, while stronger colours give it more dramatic flair.

The pattern assumes that you know how to cast on provisionally, knit nupps, read charts and attach an edging. Beading is optional but recommended for the border at least. A link is provided to instructions for the beading method used here.

You'll need 1320 beads if you bead the whole shawl but just 120 if you only bead the border.

My testers all used between 700-950 m of yarn, so 1000 m is at the high end of the yardage spectrum.
