Third Grade

from More With Les
(6) Name: 'Knitting : Third Grade

Third Grade

Basic Skills Necessary:

  • Knitting in the round, casting on, binding off, easy two-color knitting.

Pattern Description:

This versatile three-color fair isle pattern would look great in a third-grader's favorite team colors - or favorite Hogwarts house colors. A single pattern from the collection, Elementary Hats, also available on Craftsy.

5.5 stitches/inch in stockinette stitch in the round.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Child-sized: 7.5" from brim to top when measured flat. See guidelines in pattern for sizing up or down.

  • 3 colors of worsted weight wool. In the example, I used Cascade 220 and Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran. You'll need about 70 yards of two main colors and fewer than 30 yards of the third contrasting color.

You Will Also Need:

  • 16" circular needles, size US 7 (4.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge (I am a loose knitter so in the example, I used size US 6) and additional needles for small-diameter knitting (DPNs, a second circular or a long Magic Loop needle). For a tighter fit around the head, knit the brim in one size smaller needles and then go up a size for the body of the hat.
  • Tapestry needle.

Suggested yarn:

170 yards of Worsted weight

Preferred Brand/Yarn:

I used Cascade 220 and Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran.
