Basic Skills Necessary:

  • increases and decreases for simple lace, picking up stitches purlwise, 3 needle bind off, blocking lace

Pattern Description:

The basis for this shawl design comes from the combining of my two passions in knitting: lace and modular knitting.

In this shawl you get the ease, portability and color interest of modular knitting along with the grace and lightness of lace. Each square is knit in blocks of simple garter stitch based lace, one block at a time. Blocks are knit on stitches picked up from existing blocks; in a log cabin style.

For the shawl three separate squares are worked and joined together. For the smaller shawl with shrug conversion, two squares are knit and joined; buttons are added for conversion to shrug.

Pattern is presented with step by step instructions for the shawl and shrug, but these techniques can be used for any number of shapes and sizes.

Gauge:

3.5" to 20 sts and 26 rows to 2.5" on size 7 needles before blocking in Garter Stitch. Exact gauge is not critical for this project, but will affect the size and yardage required for finished piece.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Shawl is made of 3 squares, shrug of 2; blocked Sqares are 30" on a side.

  • 1000-1500 yds fingering weight yarn, large sample used 7 shades in same color way
  • Size 7 (4,5mm) needles straight or circular, 2 sets size 8 (5mm) circular for finishing (one size 7 could be used)

About the designer

I love to take an idea and translate it into knitting. If it pushes the boundaries of what has been done, that is even better. Modular knitting is probably my favorite knitting as the individual ...
