I have used this article as a reference in the past but I'm a knitter who has only had to do very small amounts of crochet and I really only know how to do single & double crochet and I have a very close friend who helps me more than anything else but this article has helped me, I hope it helps you too. If you have any questions on the knitting part just let me know. I just joined craftsy.com today & I'm not the person who made this pattern or anything but I'm trying to answer some of these questions for the people who have left questions because I love knitting and I'm stuck at home sick!!!

Here's the page: http://crafts.creativebug.com/convert-knit-stitches-crochet-stitches-1808.html & basically what it says:

1. Experiment with gauge to determine what size crochet hook and yarn will give you the same number of stitches per inch as the knitting pattern requires. Repeatedly check that your project is the correct size, especially if you are crocheting clothing. *The gauge doesn't have to be perfect for this cowl, getting close is good enough.

2. Divide the required number of knitting rows in half throughout the pattern. Crochet stitches are generally twice the height of knit stitches.

3. Replace the number of cast-on stitches in your knit pattern with an equivalent number of crocheted chain stitches. Do not include the original slip stitch or the stitch on the crochet hook when counting stitches. *This one doesn't make much sense to me because they say to "half" everything, so I would mess around with this a little.

4. Work one row of single crochet stitches for every two rows of knit, two rows of purl or one row each of purl and knit.

5. Substitute a single row of half-double crochet stitches for three rows of knit, purl or a combination of knit and purl.

6. Use a row of double crochet to replace four rows of knit, purl or a combination and use a row of triple crochet to replace six rows.

7. Create ribbing by replacing the knit 1, purl 1 pattern with crochet stitches worked in the back loops of each row.

8. Search a stitch finder -- such as the one offered by Lion Brand -- to locate unusual or complex stitches in your knitting pattern and find a crochet replacement that looks similar.

I hope this helps you!!!

I'm not familiar with how yarn works in Canada but, since this is a chunky cowl, I would venture to say you really could use any yarn you want as long as it equals what the pattern calls for, does that make sense? For instance, in the US, there is a number associated with each yarn type, most DK yarns are a number 3. I think it is the same in Canada because I can't seem to find any info otherwise. This number is on the yarn's label. So if you have a wool yarn you'd like to use, look for the number on the label. If I were making this cowl, which I will be soon, I will be using a mixture of yarns that equal 15 or 5 multiplied by 3 because she says to hold 5 strands of DK (size 3) yarn together. I really like Lion Brand's Hometown USA yarn, which is a Super Bulky number 6 yarn. I may use two strands of that together and one DK (3) which would add up to 15 or some combo like that, does that make sense? I haven't tried it yet and you would have to make sure you have enough yarn because it would be different than what is listed in the pattern but I'm 99.9% sure it will work. I hope that helps. Here's a link to a weight sizing chart: http://www.craftyarncouncil.com/weight.html

That's a GREAT suggestion theresa.f5357018!!! I love learning new things : ) I've had this problem MANY times because I love knitting big, bulky things. I've used Ziploc bags for each skein of yarn and just been really careful that they aren't tangling after I finish each row/round. It's a bit more time consuming but usually stops the frustration of the tangling. You have to make sure you take the yarn from the part of the skein that pulls from the end though or it won't work smoothly. You can really use anything that you can put the yarn in that will still allow you to pull the yarn thru one end but has a hole that won't let the whole skein of yarn through. I have a couple cheap little drawstring backpacks that I bought from Old Navy in the 90's that I now use for this purpose too. I hope that helps : )

I made sure the yarn was in front of me and the skeins as far away from eachother as possible. The yarn did twist together as I knitted. Once in awhile I would take the tedious task of untangling them. Sometimes with the help of my husband becasue I didn't want to move to make it worse. When the yarn went over the needle it seemed to untwist for me most of the time.

I have knitted this scarf 3 times. Once I didn't use the circular needles as they should be used. The other times, I tried using the circular needles and not joining the scarf, only to have it so twisted that it is un wearable. Please tell me how to knit the scarf so it is not twisted and curled. I used 5 balls of cream rowan all seasons cotton ( it's double knitting) and did this in 2 hours no probs - love the result and am going to try with 5 balls of any double knitting wool and make another!

This yarn is only available in the UK, Is there an equivalent yarn for purchase in the US?

Stylecraft Twirl Dk is a low price point acrylic yarn (but stylecraft make quite nice acyrlic yarns) Details on Yarndex here http://www.yarndex.com/yarn.cfm?yarn_id=6774. It's a standard DK and with average tension you'd use a 4mm needle. I suspect you could use any similar weight yarn. As it is a cowl, a slight change to gauge shouldn't cause a problem.
At the moment I am trying to work out if I could use a super bulky yarn in my stash for this pattern but think it mightn't be thick enough!

Maybe combine a thin yarn with your super bulky to make it thicker?
