So Easy It’s Gross Hat

Basic Skills Necessary:

  • knit, slip, Open Provisional Cast On, grafting in garter stitch

Pattern Description:

Have we all knit sideways garter-stitch hats? I have, and loved them. Dee liked the one I made her, but requested a hat with more drape and less of a "You know, sticking-up area in the back." This is the result.

This hat is beyond easy. You don't even have to wrap the short-row turns. Garter stitch takes care of the gaps for you. There are 12 rows, repeated 12 times = 144, or a "gross" in U.S. retail terms.

21 sts and 28 rows in 4 inches (10 cm) in blocked garter stitch.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • 8 inches (20 cm) from the top of the hat to the brim. 20 inches (17.5 cm) inches around.

  • Blue Moon Fiber Arts' Socks that Rock Heavyweight. 100% Merino wool, 350 yards (320 meters) in 198 grams (6.98 ounces). 1 skein. Sample is in Raven Clan: Shadow. (One skein should be enough to make two hats.) #6 (4.0 mm) needles, or size needed to obtain gauge, any style.

Suggested yarn:

175 yards of DK weight

Preferred Brand/Yarn:

Blue Moon Fiber Arts' Socks that Rock Heavyweight
