Basic Skills Necessary:

  • knit, purl, decrease, increase, 3 needle join, short rows

Pattern Description:

This scarf found its inspiration in the Elizabethan Ruff. Instructions are given for two versions, a cowl (shown in teal) and a tied scarf (shown in pink).


Tie: 32 sts and 36 rows = 4? / 10 cm in St st
Cowl: 22 sts and 28 rows = 4? / 10 cm in St st

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Tie: 5 1/2? / 14 cm wide x 42? / 106.5 cm long
  • Cowl: 8? / 20.5 cm wide x 21 1/2? / 54.5 cm long


  • Tie: Size 4 / 3.5 mm (3 needles needed for 3-Needle Bind-Off)
  • Cowl: Size 7 / 4.5 mm (3 needles needed for 3-Needle Bind-Off)

You Will Also Need:

  • Medium-size crochet hook for provisional CO, spare circular needles or scrap yarn to use as stitch holders, cable needle, tapestry needle
