Samothrace Cowl (2 styles)

Basic Skills Necessary:

  • you should know how to knit in the round, purl, yarn over and slip stitches

Pattern Description:

A cowl designed to keep you warm but let your neck breathe. The open stitch pattern keeps you from overheating, but will still take the chill off and keep you toasty.

Both styles knit up quite quickly in a worsted or aran weight and the stitch pattern is easy enough to memorize but still keep it interesting.

Inspired by the "Nike of Samothrace" statue whose draping clothing reminds me of the infinity style scarf.

8 stitches and 14 rows over 2 inches in pattern stitch, but gauge is not extremely important with this item. Play with the yarn weight and needle size if you want to, it will still turn out with lovely results.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • infinity style: 45-50" after blocking; short cowl: 18-20 inches around

  • size 10 or 10.5 circular needles
  • worsted or aran weight yarn (150-225 yards depending on style)

You Will Also Need:

  • a stitch marker and a tapestry needle to weave in ends
