(6) Name: 'Knitting : Quarter

Basic Skills Necessary:

  • the pattern was designed to teach intarsia

Pattern Description:

This pattern is a good start if you are planning to explore the intarsia technique a little. You will work plain and patterned intarsia, both on the flat piece and in the round. The result is a pretty set of winterly accessories that includes a scarf, a hat and mittens.

As always a detailed illustrated appendix explains all techniques used to work all three projects.

Fingering weight yarn/4-ply; Shown in
LANG YARNS Baby Alpaca; 100%Baby Alpaca; 170 m (186 yds)/50 g
Colour A (0004 " black): 1 skein
Colour B (0033 " petrol): 5 skeins
Colour C (0016 - green): 3 skeins
Scarf: 33 m (36 yds) of colour A, 457 m (500 yds) of colour B and 411 m (449.5 yds) of colour C
Hat: 27 m (29.5 yds) of colour A, 144.5-161 m (158-176 yds) of colour B and 39.5-42.5 m (43-46.5 yds) of colour C
Mittens: 39-57.5 m (43-63 yds) of colour A, 97-143 m (106-156 yds) of colour B and 29-44 m (31.5-48 yds) of colour C

Finished Sizes:
Scarf: 92.5/235 cm long and 13/33.5 cm wide
Hat: Fits head circumference of 20-24/52-60 cm,
three sizes available
Mittens: Hand circumference of 6.3-9/16-23 cm,
sizes 6, 7, 7.5, 8, 8.5, 9, 9.5 available


28 sts and 28 ridges* = 4/10 cm
*1 ridge is made up of 2 rows
- US#1/2.5 mm - Garter stitch, knit flat (i.e. in rows)


  • US#1.5/2.5 mm needles

You Will Also Need:

  • Crochet hook US#B-1/2.5 mm (for chain of slip sts)
  • Waste yarn (to mark increases)
  • 18 (19, 20) stitch markers (to mark the beginning of rnd and the decreases)
