Pattern Description:

Inspired by a detail on a 14th Century Italian fabric, Popinjays are a whimsical set of stranded-knit handwarmers marrying warm-weather tropical birds to cold-weather Nordic-style knitwear.

Yarn information is listed for the smallest size (knit in fingering weight), but the pattern includes two larger sizes knit in sport weight and worsted weight respectively. Select size, then select yarn appropriate to that size.


Size small: 36sts/40rows= 4 inches over cuff pattern with fingering weight yarn

Size Medium: 32sts/34rows= 4 inches over cuff pattern in sport weight yarn

Size Large: 28sts/30rows= 4 inches over cuff pattern in worsted weight yarn

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Size Small for Hand Circumference: 7.5"
  • Size Medium for Hand Circumference: 8.5"
  • Size Large for Hand Circumference: 9.5"


  • Size small: US 1 (2.25mm), US 2 (2.75mm) Double-Pointed Needles. Size Medium: US 2 (2.75mm), US 2.5 (3mm) Double-Pointed Needles. Size Large: US 2.5 (3mm), US 3 (3.25mm) Double-Pointed Needles.
