Pattern Description:

This texture-tastic, swirly, wavy, buttony, sea-inspired hat can be made in either a cloche or beret style, and is custom fit to your head by placing the buttons just so! Make a more subdued solid color version or a vibrant 2-color hat with contrasting waves!

Notes are given for 2-color version, and also for custom sizing, finishing (how to block), and all techniques used.

The pattern uses: short rows in the brim, knitting the brim flat, knitting the hat body in the round, sewing brim straps into loops to make buttonholes, wet blocking to smooth out shape.

Gauge:

Small size - more fitted, cloche-style hat: 5 stitches per inch in stockinette. Large size - slouchy, beret-style hat: 4.5 stitches per inch in stockinette.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • adult smaller (cloche style) and larger (beret style) - both are adjustable with button placement

Materials:

  • Approx 145 yards of worsted or aran weight yarn
  • 1 16" size US 6 or 8 circular needle - size to get gauge, depending on size choice
  • Set of same size double pointed needles
  • 2 buttons (plus needle and thread to sew them on)

You Will Also Need:

  • 2 stitch markers
  • A yarn needle
  • A large bowl, large plate, or piece of cardboard cut to size for blocking large version; a foam head, balloon, or other head-shaped object for blocking small version
