Basic Skills Necessary:

  • Techniques Used: Long-tail cast on, corrugated ribbing, slipstitch colorwork in five patterns, knit/purl, grafting.
  • Experience Level: Intermediate. This pattern contains full written instructions, as well as charts for the slipstitch colorwork.

Pattern Description:

Slipstitch colorwork mosaic socks knit from the cuff down with heel flap and gusset. Inspired by the art and architecture of ancient Byzantium.


Gauge: 38 st x 48 rows/4" in stockinette stitch, after blocking.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Size: S (M, L): 72 (80, 88) st, to fit Women's US 6/7 (8/9, 10/11) shoe size.


  • Yarn: Malabrigo Sock (100% merino wool, 440 yards); 1 skein MC, 1 skein CC. Shown in Azules (MC) and Botticelli Red (CC).

You Will Also Need:

  • Other Materials: US 1 (2.25 mm) DPNs or 32" circular needle if using Magic Loop method, or size to match gauge. Yarn needle. Stitch markers (3).
