If I close my eyes I can picture them perfectly. Blue and white cloth with small plastic white beads between the cloth incased marbles, the fabric tied in an over-hand knot at the back. The thought of them takes me back to when I was five, sitting on my mom's lap, playing with her beads.
Now, as a mom, I know why she wore them. Not only were they in style in the 80s, they were virtually indestructible. Little children could play with them and not break them. And do you know how entertaining "Mama's beads" can be? I have often distracted and entertained my two-year-old with "Mama's beads."
Mom's Beads is a knitted version of those fabric and marble creations. The glass beads are inserted as you knit and the whole necklace is knitted from end to end in one piece. And this version is fairly indestructible too!

My mother was a big crafter. I cannot remember a moment when we were not creating something in the kitchen, in the sewing room or on the needles. I have continued that tradition with my own son. He thinks it is quite grand to do a "project' with mommy! And I think it is quite grand to have someone to do a "project" with.
