Basic Skills Necessary:

  • knit, purl, yo, k2tog
  • chart reading
  • grafting (kitchener stitch)
  • provisional cast-on

Pattern Description:

The Midgard Serpent is a creature in Norse mythology. The giant snake surrounds Midgard (the world) holding in the great seas. It is so large it surrounds the world and bite its own tail.

At the end of time, during Ragnarrk, the Midgard Serpent will let go of its tail and the oceans will fall off the edge of the world, and the world will end.

The cowl is double-knit, and as such completely reversible.


20 stitches and 39 rows = 4 inches in in pattern, blocked


  • 2 sets of 3.5 mm [US 4] circular needles
  • 2 contrasting colours of sport weight yarn (~250 yds of each colour)

You Will Also Need:

  • large-eyed, blunt needle
  • stitchmarker

Suggested yarn:

500 yards of Sport weight
