(6) Name: 'Knitting : Malva

Basic Skills Necessary:

  • Cast on
  • Knit and purl
  • Lace knitting (yo, k2tog, p2tog, ssk, 'sl 1, k2tog, psso')
  • Estonian stitches - explained in the pattern (nupp, 2 into 2 gathered)
  • Picking up stitches along an edge
  • Short rows
  • I-cord bind off - explained in the pattern

Pattern Description:

Malva is an elegant and simple lace shawl, with a stockinette stitch body and a beautiful lace edging. It has a crescent shape that makes it drape well over the shoulders. The flower motif on the lace edging is worked with traditional estonian lace stitches. The knitting starts with the lace edging. Stitches are then picked up along the edge, and the shawl is is shaped with short rows.

The pattern is suitable for intermediate knitters. Specific required skills are listed above. Instructions are both written and charted. The pattern has been test knit and professionally tech edited to reduce the possibility for error, but if you have questions or believe that you have found an error, please contact me.


14 sts/32 rows = 4"/10 cm in stockinette stitch after blocking.

Gauge is not important in this pattern, but a different gauge will affect the finished size and the yarn requirement.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Instructions are given for three different sizes.
  • Length: 40 (48, 56) / 102 (122, 142) cm
  • Width: 13 1/2 ( 15, 17 1/2) / 34 (38, 42) cm


  • Approximately 400 (560, 720) yd/ 365 (510, 655) m of lace weight yarn.

You Will Also Need:

  • US #4/3.5 mm circular or straight needles, or the needles that gives you a fabric you like.
  • Tapestry needle
