3-dimensional shawl, with deeply ruffled edges that can be both feminine and mathematically fascinating
written pattern, no chart

no short rows, no other techniques involved
tested and tech edited

Inspired by the frilly, white lichens scattered everywhere around the Viking farm I visited in Iceland. This is a very simple pattern appropriate for a beginner-with-a-friend-to-answer-questions, yet also fascinating for more advanced crafters.

Gauge:

13 sts = 4"/10 cm in Stockinette Stitch, well-blocked

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Adjustable based on yarn choice. As shown, the sample measures 9.5"/24 cm deep and has a wingspan of 54"/137 cm.

Materials:

  • Yarn: about 300 yards Heavy Aran weight. Shown in madelinetosh Tosh Chunky, 2 skeins
  • Knitting needles: US 10.5/6.5 mm
  • Large-eyed needle for sewing ends
  • Many pins for blocking; sample shown used 200 pins

Suggested yarn:

300 yards of Chunky weight
