Inspired by one of Dorothy Reade's lace mesh patterns (Nr. 15). A modified version is used on the bands of all of the variations of the hat.
Gauge is tricky because the hat is a circular knit that increases in size: By the time you take the gauge, you could have knitted the entire hat. Using Size 1, 2 or 3 needles will result in either a toque (skull cap) or beret! ;-) But the circumeference for small should be 21.5" and for medium to large 23".
80 to 95 yards lace weight yarn (twice amount if used doubled)
