Pattern Description:

Knitting pattern for a basic close-fitting beanie hat in 7 sizes, to fit a newborn baby right up to adult size, plus instructions to make it into either a koala or a panda hat.

There are 2 sizes of ears, noses and panda's "eye spots' to fit the size of beanie you are making. Also a choice of 2 simple hem styles.

This is a written pattern for a hat made on 2 needles with a back seam, using any smooth 8 ply / DK yarn.

The basic hat pattern is the same for either the koala or the panda and can also be used as a simple stocking stitch beanie pattern without the animal features.


21 sts, 28 rows to 10 cm in stocking stitch on 4 mm (US 6) needles, using 8 ply /DK yarn

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • to fit head sizes: 35 cm, 38 cm, 43 cm, 47 cm, 50 cm, 55 cm, 59 cm


  • DK/8 ply yarn 35 - 80 gms (depending on size) in main colour
  • 15 - 20 gms of black 8 ply/DK for panda
  • Eyelash yarn, fur yarn or mohair approx 10 - 15 gms in white or cream for koala's ears

You Will Also Need:

  • 1 pair 4 mm (US 6) needles
  • 1 pair 3.25 mm (US 3) needles
  • tapestry needle for sewing seams and embroidering features; a few safety pins
  • optional: 12-15 mm toy eyes (for over 3 yr old children)
  • small amount toy filling for koala nose
