The Extendo Shawl is worked from the bottom up, it's edging is worked first in two halves and grafted in the center. The body stitches are then picked up across the top of the edging and worked with decreases at the edges and center seam so that the shawl seamlessly tapers to the top. Optional beads add both weight and texture to this piece creating a fabric that is knit though it appears woven. The Extendo stitch, while looking quite complex, is easily memorized and repeats itself throughout the entire body of the shawl. Video links are included for the tricksy bits!

Laura Nelkin lives in upstate New York, where the sunny season is short, leaving plenty of time to be indoors knitting. Though she has a degree in apparel design, she took to knitting years ago and hasn't looked back since. Laura is currently enamored with lace, and with incorporating beads into knitted jewelry, so most of her designs lean in this direction. She travels often to teach these techniques and more at workshops around the country. Her designs have been featured in a number of online publications, including Interweave, Knitty.com, Schaefer Yarn Co. and Creative Knitting. Her new book, Knockout Knits, will be released in September 2014.View all patterns by designer (26) »
