I am able to read charts, but I have come to the lace edging with 207 stitches on the needle. I have worked the first row of the chart, but do not have enough stitches to have an even number of pattern repeats (pink section) worked across. I need two more stitches to finish the repeat before working the last stitches to the center. Help!
I have the same problem. My first shawl and I am stuck on the edging. I'm sure I'm doing it wrong as so many others have had success. Here's what I understand to be the first 1/2 of row 1: K,K, yo, K, K, K, (yo, SK2P, yo, K), K, K, yo, ssk, yo with the parenthesis being the repeat. Anyone care to see if they can see what I did wrong?
I got guidance from the author- so you start row one of the edging with (from right to left on the chart: k,k,yo, k,(k,k,yo,sk2p,yo,k), k,k,yo,ssk,yo with pattern repeat in parens. What threw me off was the black no stitch squares- the author said to basically ignore those and start with the first actual chart stitch. So it looks like you're OK, except the pattern repeat strarts with two knit stitches. Hope this helps.
It is so great to find this beautyful pattern for free! But I need some help please, anyone? I have never knitted a shawl before, it's my first time. So far it's rather easy, I'm at ca. 2/3 of the body - but what I completely do not understand, is how this will look like when finished? If I read the pattern it seems to me that the edge chart will be knitted at the top of the shawl, so at the broadest part that is put on the shoulders - while on the pictures the edge is on the sides? Am I missing something?
Just hang in there. It works out to where the zigzag is on the edges. When you start this shawl, you are starting at the top and working your way down.
Im all confused!! are you teasing about offering the lacey shawl as a free pattern??? if not please say so I have spent time trying to get the "free" pattern and there is no way i can get to itif you expect me to buy something THEN you will give me this pattern then you can keep it thanks anyway
You need an Adobe Reader. I downloaded it immediately through my Adobe reader
if anyone is still having problems adding this to cart and so on, just look it up on ravelry it's a free pattern there as well.
I also can not download the free shawl "easy as pie pattern."

Need easier ways to download
Love the pattern. Love written directions more. Written directions for everything except the lace edging and it's charted. I don't read charts and have tried. Please put written instructions for lace edging.
Agree. Very hard for beginner to read chart.
Please do yourself a favor and try " Charts Made Simple: understanding knitting charts visually" by JC Briar. It's around $16 on Amazon,; you may be able to get it from your local library. It's small, but powerful. I really wanted to try lace, but I could not read charts, and I would get lost in the words with descriptive patterns. Since using this book I have knit at least 10 pieces successfully using charts. In fact, now I make charts if the pattern is only descriptive. It's so much easier. Give it a try.
If you can't read charts try writing each line of the pattern on a separate small piece of paper in a column instead of horizontally.
I CANNOT read charts because of a brain recognition problem. If I was threatened with death I still could not read one because I cannot see the symbols. So, please, if you offer a free pattern, don't make half of it impossible to finish. There are many thousands of us who could never do a charted pattern because of vision or brain problems but we absolutely love to knit lace and there is not a book or tutorial available that would help us.
I, too, have serious problems trying to read charts - dyslexia - I'm going to have my daughter write the chart out for me because I love the pattern that much! Thank you.
That is a truly beautiful shawl, just wish I could knit something as stunning as this, but I can only knit bears :( You are so kind to give such a stunning pattern away for free.
If you can knit bears, you can do anything. Bears are tough. You're better than you think you are :o)

I have not done lace, nor have I knit from a chart, but I should have books that tell me how somewhere in my knitting library. And I am certain I have just the right materials hiding in my stash room. Thanks again!
there is a key on page 2 of the pattern download. The easiest way for a beginner is to get out a pice of paper and write it out. circles are yarnovers for example. before you know it you will understand and be knitting from charts with ease. In this particular chart the parts shaded blue always stay the same...the two stitches on the edges and the center stitch. The pink sections are your repeats. black squares are nothing.. Just folow the chart from 1 on up. This chart only shows what to do on the knitted side as the purl side is the same as it is through the entire piece.

Thank you for the lovely pattern, this is my first attempt at a shawl, and it's name attracted me in the first instance. I am knitting this from a handspun English Leister wool, in its natural fleece colour, and I have assumed that the needles are US sizing so have opted for a UK4.5. I am almost out to the zig zag edge and my shawl seems quite small. I am probably a tight knitted but also wondered whether I had made the right assumption about the needle size - hopefully all things will ease in the wash and blocking it will release the tension. Cheers & thanks again (PS, I didn't have a drama downloading the free pattern, it was as you say, easy as pie and did it on the iPad!).
Thank you for offering this as a free pattern. It helped to take a look at the pattern to gauge the difficulty of the chart along with the written directions. I like to stretch my learning curve, which is part of the reason why I knit, but I also recognize when something is beyond my ability. The download couldn't have been easier and I'm not sure how you could've written the pattern any clearer, in written form or chart form. Wish me luck, if this goes well, I'll step up on the chart difficulty scale. ;-)

Just downloaded the pattern and it worked perfectly. Wish there weren't so many angry sounding comments here :( I've found Craftsy to be very helpful and responsive in resolving any problems I have.
Agreed. I have trouble with the entire concept of making demands or complaining about something that is FREE.
