Basic Skills Necessary:

  • knit
  • purl

Pattern Description:

This cowl has a lovely combination of vertical ribs and horizontal stripes of Garter stitch on a Stockinette stitch background.

The cowl is knit flat and then sewn up in the final step using the Mattress technique (diagrams included). It's a great first project for anyone learning how to knit or those who don't have (or want) to use circular needles to make a cowl.


20 stitches and 24 rows = 4 inches in
Stockinette stitch

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Finished cowl measures about 22" around and 8" in height.


  • 200 yards of Worsted weight yarn
  • Size 8 knitting needles
  • Tapestry needle
