Basic Skills Necessary:

  • knitting in the round
  • purl
  • increase
  • decrease

Pattern Description:

Custom Tritops is a pattern set for any-gauge, custom fitting hats - you choose yarn (in any weight!), brim width, style, and one of three different tri-themed top decrease designs, each with a garter stitch element, tying it together with the sideways garter stitch brim!

With all the customization options, and the any-gauge versatility, this is a limitless pattern set! Once you get the hang of how the construction and custom fitting works, you'll want to make tritop after tritop, trying out all the different possibilities!

The brim is made using a sideways edge cast-on, ideal construction for a custom-fit any-gauge hat. It's simple once you try it out, using increases and basic short rows to leave stitches along the side of the garter stitch brim, avoiding any later picking up of stitches or seaming. A provisional cast-on and grafting are used on the brim seam for a seamless edge (photo tutorials are included for both).

Custom sizing can be done by either trying the brim on around your head as you work, or doing some measuring and a wee bit of basic math to figure out the perfect stitch number for a custom fit.

The PDF is 18 pages, with photo tutorials, photo details about the sideways edge cast-on technique, lots of info about the different styles and custom options - very few pages need to be printed (if you like printing your patterns), as the actual pattern takes up only a few pages (since you'd only use one of the three decrease designs).

Note: Remember, this is not a normal knitting pattern. You will be required to make choices for your hats, and figure out your own custom sized stitch counts. Nothing is hard or complicated, and it will result in truly one-of-a-kind pieces, but some extra thinking is required of the knitter.
