Basic Skills Necessary:

  • knit and purl in the round

Pattern Description:

Carapace has a patterning reminiscent of sea shells.
The hat is seamless for the wearer's comfort.

Instructions are given for a single colour but if preferred the shells could easily be knitted in a contrast yarn, the pattern tells you how.

Sizes: Newborn (3m-3y, 3-3y), (6-14y, Teen-Adult, Large Adult)
Yarn Required: 110 (120, 130), (160, 190, 200) yards of DK weight yarn.
If you are working in two colours then you will need about ⅓ of the amount listed for the contrast colour and ⅔ of the amount listed as a main colour.

Carapace (noun): A protective, shell like covering.

Gauge:

22 sts x 28 rows = 10 cm/4 inches in stockinette stitch

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Newborn to Adult; 15"-23" head

Materials:

  • 4 mm (US 6) needles (circular or DPNs)
  • 3 mm (US 2.5) needles (circular or DPNs)
  • Stitch marker
  • Darning needle for weaving in loose ends

Suggested yarn:

110 yards of DK weight
