About the designer

My family is made up of moi, my loving/enabling husband, my silly son and two rascally rabbits. I have a passionate love for hand-painted yarns and got sick of trying to knit them up and having them ...

(6) Name: 'Knitting : Caladan

Basic Skills Necessary:

  • Read a knitting pattern
  • Beading with a crochet hook.
  • Lace stitches,
  • Intermediate level decreases.

Pattern Description:

Caladan is the stormy and windswept ocean home world of House Atreides; the watery and wavy elements of this crescent shaped shawl were designed to evoke these images, with some beautiful beads added in for fun. It is particularly well suited to watery colored variegated yarns, not to say that it wouldn't look fabulous in other colors!

Caladan is the fifth shawl in my Dune series of crescent shaped shawls inspired by the House Atreides. It requires intermediate knitting skills including wrong side patterning, beading, and complex decreases. Experienced lace knitters will find enough to keep them interested and beginning lace knitters will probably find it a challenge.

A note on materials:
Instructions are provided completely written out, with a chart option for the bulk of the lacework. You will need 4 stitch markers, 400 size 6/0 beads and a crochet hook of appropriate size to apply the beads (I used a #8) to complete this piece.

A note on yardage:
Malabrigo Sock is a Light Fingering weight. During test knitting there was considerable variance in yardage used, I believe this is due to substitution of standard weight fingering yarns. If you wish to substitute you will need in the 475 - 500 yard range. I have also provided an option for a slightly smaller version of the shawl for those with skeins of fingering weight in the 400 - 450 yard range. Finally, I have included a suggestion as to where to start a contrast color edging if that is a better solution for you.
