Basic Skills Necessary:

  • You need to be able to knit and purl.
  • You'll also need to work a few rounds with double pointed needles for the thumbs, but that's a good occasion to learn if you've never tried it before :-)

Pattern Description:

I love fingerless mittens.. but hate to work with double pointed needles !

So I devised this little pattern for quick mitts worked FLAT on straight needles, with only a couple rounds (worked in 5 minutes!) worked on dpns for the thumbs.

The alternating ribs create a fun "Cactus" motif, which is especially suitable for the first light-green version. Those ribs also help keeping the mitts nice and snug around your hands.

Those are super fun and quick to make. And because I wrote the instructions for TWO WEIGHTS of yarn, it's a fabulous stash-busting option, with only 85m/95 yds of yarn needed !

It's also the perfect pattern to use with HANDSPUN yarn, since you can choose the instructions that will fit best your yarn.

This pattern gives instructions for 2 yarn weights (worsted or aran weight): either with Colonia 140 (gauge 15.5 st / 23 rows) OR with Malabrigo worsted (18st /26 rows)

The mittenettes are knit FLAT (except 8 thumb-rows worked on dpns) and seamed at the end: If like me you don't like double pointed needles you are going to LOVE this pattern !!

Permission to sell your finished items. :-)

Gauge depends on yarn weight chosen:
with Colonia 140, gauge is 15.5 st / 23 rows

OR with Malabrigo worsted:18st /26 rows

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • One size fits most women's hands.

  • You'll have to choose between 2 yarn weight options:
  • Colonia 140 by , 1 skein in aqua verde, OR Merino Worsted by Malabrigo , 1 hank in Calypso.
  • 5mm (US8) straight needles + 1 set 5 mm (US8) double pointed needles (you'll only need 4).

You Will Also Need:

  • A darning needle to close the side seam of your mitts at the end.
  • A stitch-holder to hold the live stitches for the thumbs (or a length of scrap yarn will work very well too)
