Basic Skills Necessary:

  • This is a project for first-time knitters using basic knit and purl stitches, and simple shapings.

Pattern Description:

Beginners garter stitch slouchy beret

"A classic beginners' stitch showcased in a great staple yarn with just the right proportions certain to become an 'essential' for the season. Once you've mastered this easy shape, experiment with colour blocking and stripes" - Jo Storie

Sizes available to fit:
Adult - Circumference - 50cm (20in)
Child - Circumference - 45cm (18in)

Knitted measurements approx:
Adult - 61cm (24in)
Child - 52cm (20in)

Adult - 32cm (12in)
Child - 26cm (10in)

Yarn amount
1 ball = 100g (approx 110m / 120yds)

You will need (approx):
Child size - 1 ball / 95g (105m / 114yds)
Adult size - 1.5 balls / 150g (165m / 180yds)


13 sts x 18 rows to 10 x 10cm (4 x 4in) in garter st using 7mm (US10.5 - 11) needles.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Two sizes - adult and child - see pattern description for details.


  • Approx 105-165m (114-180yds) Rowan Purelife British Sheep Breeds Chunky 100% undyed wool - we used mid-brown Jacob.

You Will Also Need:

  • one pair each of 5.5mm (US 9) and 7mm (US 10.5 - 11) straight needles
  • a tapestry needle for sewing up
  • row counters.
