Basic Skills Necessary:

  • knit
  • k2tog
  • knitting in the round
  • k1f&b - knit one stitch in the front and back of the loop
  • ssk - slip one stitch, slip the next stitch, knit the two stitches together

Pattern Description:

This project is easily knit in a day from start to finish. It is knit in the round using only the knit stitch (stockinette). The ears require a Turkish Cast-On for a finished appearance from the front or back of the hat, but you can certainly make them differently if desired, maybe doubling the yarn and following the directions (just so they are stiff enough to stand up on the hat).


In stockinette stitch:
4 sts and 6 rounds = 1 inch

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • 0-3mo - circumference 12.5", height 5.5"
  • 4-6mo - circumference 15", height 6.5"
  • 7-12mo - circumference 17.5"; height 7"
  • 1-2yrs - circumference 17.5"; height 7.5"
  • 2-4yrs - circumference 20"; height 8"


  • 60-85 yards worsted weight yarn - yellow
  • 16-20 yards worsted weight yarn - red
  • scraps of black worsted weight yarn
  • Size 7 and size 8 - 16-inch circular needles
  • Size 8 double pointed needles

You Will Also Need:

  • 2 - 1/2 inch black buttons
  • black felt for nose
  • blunt needle
  • black sewing thread and sewing needle
