Pattern Description:

Ballena is a breezy shawlette ideal for year round wear. Throw this sweet shawl over your shoulders as summer evenings turn cool and wrap it close around your neck as fall leaves begin to fly. Ballena is shaped to drape comfortably and gracefully over your shoulders and stay in place. Eyelet trim along the upper edge and instructions for making pedestal buttons offer the option of buttoning the neckline in a variety of configurations, adding versatility and style.


16 sts and 28 rows = 4"/10cm in Stockinette stitch with US 6 needle or size needed to obtain gauge

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Length of upper border from tip to tip = 37"
  • Depth at center back from border to lace edging = 14 1/2"
  • Width of front edges (measured from upper border to lace edging) = 8"


  • Yarn: DK weight wool such as Malabrigo Silky Merino or Arroyo (450 yds)
  • US 6 (4.0mm) circular needles
  • US 4 (3.5mm) circular needle
  • US 7 (4.5mm) circular needle

You Will Also Need:

  • stitch markers
  • tapestry needle
  • 2 flat buttons - 3/8"
  • 2 shank buttons - 3/8"
