Pattern Description:

On August 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution was ratified, prohibiting the denial of any citizen the right to vote based on sex. The legislation was in part due to the leadership and lobbying efforts of suffragist Alice Paul (Jan. 11, 1885 - July 9, 1977). For the rest of her life, Ms. Paul campaigned for the equality of women throughout the world, including fighting to include gender equality in the charter of the United Nations.

The hat is worked flat then seamed together with the shirred panel. The visor is worked separately, seamed, then attached to the hat body. Instructions for several different accessories will allow you to personalize and change the the look of your hat.

(Blue sample worked in size M using Alpaca with a Twist Socrates (30% baby alpaca, 20% nylon, 20% bamboo, 30% merino wool; 400 yds/ 366 m; 3.5 oz/ 99 g); color: 1090 navi's blue, 1 ball. Green sample worked in size M The Fibre Co. Canopy Fingering (50% alpaca, 30% merino, 20% bamboo; 200 yds/ 183 m; 1.76 oz/ 50 g); color: paw paw, 2 skeins.)


30 sts and 44 rows = 4"/ 10cm in St st with larger needles

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • Toddler (Child/X-Small, Small, Medium, Large, X-Large)
  • Finished Head Circumference: 16.75 (18.75, 19.25, 20.5, 21.25, 22.75)"/ 42.5 (47.5, 49, 52, 54, 57.5)cm, fits heads up to 2"/ 5cm larger than finished size
  • Height: 6.5 (7, 7.5, 7.75, 8.25, 8.5)"/ 16.5 (18, 18.50, 19.5, 21, 21.5)cm


  • Approximately 230 (280, 310, 340, 375, 415) yds/ 210 (256, 283, 311, 323, 380) m of fingering weight yarn needles: US 2/ 2.75 mm needle, or size needed to obtain gauge
  • US 2/ 2.75 mm needles for working small circumferences, or size to obtain gauge
  • US 1/ 2.25 mm needle, or 1-2 sizes smaller than larger needle
