Pattern Description:

The inspiration for this cowl/scarf came from the wonderful memories I have of living near the ocean when my two boys were young and our long walks on the beach. The two cables on the top edge of the cowl remind me of two sets of footprints meandering in the sand along the edge of the waves, the wave stitch pattern on the other edge of the cowl. The scallop shell pattern on one end buttons onto shell buttons (what else!) on the other end. You may have some wonderful memories of walking along a beach on a trip to Florida, or a honeymoon in Bermuda or just a stroll on a beautiful lake with someone special. Make your cowl in a color and with some special buttons that will remind you of that time.

Pattern includes instructions for making this cowl using either worsted weight yarn or fingering weight yarn.

Gauge:

Using worsted weight yarn and size 7 needles in stockinette stitch: 6 sts and 7 rows per inch with knitting slightly stretched

Using sock or fingering weight yarn and size 4 needles in stockinette stitch: 7 sts and 9 rows per inch with knitting slightly stretched.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

Cowl using worsted weight yarn after blocking: 23" (58.5cm) long, 7 1/2" 19cm) wide
Cowl using sock or fingering weight yarn after blocking: 20" long (51cm), 6 1/2" (16.5cm) wide

Materials:

175 yards of worsted weight yarn size US 7 (4.5mm) straight knitting needles four 1" (25mm) buttons if making cowl
200 yards of sock weight or fingering weight yarn size US 4 (3.5mm) straight knitting needles five 5/8" (15mm) buttons if making cowl
