Basic Skills Necessary:

  • Simple embroidery

Pattern Description:

Aine is an original Celtic knot design suitable for all kinds of hand embroidery and is design #1 of the Legend of Merlin series created by Scarlett Rose. Learn the twilling stitch, the latest embroidery craze since candlewicking! Or choose your favorite embroidery stitch, such as the stem stitch or back stitch, for stitching this beautiful Celtic knot. Aine can also be Sashiko stitched!

The pattern includes step by step instructions and pictures on how to do the twilling stitch, a textured looking knotted embroidery stitch used in the sample block shown here. The step-by-step pictures show how to make this knotted stitch for right or left handed stitchers.

This sample was stitched in three colors of pearl cotton thread to clearly show the details of the Celtic knotwork. Choose your own colors and/or combination of colors for your own project.

This full size 8 inch Celtic knot may be enlarged or reduced as needed to fit different projects. When adding beads, leave a space equal to one knot before starting the next knot so that the bead will be nestled against the background fabric. Please visit the Embroidery Gallery to see stitched samples of all of Scarlett's embroidery designs.

Sizing / Finished Measurements:

  • 8" design which can fit 10" or larger blocks unless size is adjusted by reducing or enlarging.

Materials:

  • Cotton fabric, 10" square or larger - use fusible interfacing as a backing if the fabric is lightweight, especially if beads are going to be added.
  • #5 pearl cotton thread, craft thread or embroidery floss can be used for embroidering.
  • Embroidery, darning or chenille needles - must have sharp points with eyes large enough to make threading easy. Embroidery needle size 2 or 3, or darning needle size 5 or 7 suggested, especially if adding beads with the twilling stitch, since the needle must allow 6/0 beads to slide over the needle easily.
  • Marking pen for tracing design onto fabric or transfer paper
  • Hoop (optional) - a personal preference for embroidery.
