I am a wife, mother and grandmother. My profile picture is of me with 4 of my grandchildren. Over the recent holiday, I taught them to crochet chains with one of them progressing to single crochet. I learned to embroider when I was 6 and I learned to knit when I was nine. I don?t really know how old I was when I learned to cook, quilt and sew. I have just always known. I taught myself to crochet when my children were little and it has become my second favorite hobby, just under my love of reading. I now listen to audio books while I crochet and enjoy both of them at the same time.
I came from a long line of tough, hardworking pioneer women who knitted, crocheted, quilted, embroidered, sewed, grew their own food and canned and preserved it, as a way of life and survival. They didn?t know what ?crafting? was, it was all in a days work. I grew up the same way because that?s just how our world was. You should have heard my grandmother cackle in the ?70?s when the naturalists learned how to ?craft? and grow and preserve their own food to save the environment.
All of my brothers can quilt, because if Mama had a quilt in the frame, and you wanted to watch tv, you worked on the quilt. Quilting wasn?t an art form, it was the way we stayed warm at night and we were grateful for it.
Two of my brothers still quilt and taught their wives how. One of those brothers does beautiful embroidery work that he incorporates into the quilts they make for their family. Don?t misunderstand, they are hard working tough guys, who also take care of livestock and gardens. They enjoy doing their needlework while they watch tv (which is a little comical when the Dallas Cowboys are playing!), which is just how Mama taught them!
