Class Description

Open up new quilting possibilities as Cheryl Arkison guides you through various ways to add full, half and quarter circles to your quilts. In addition to appliqué, learn a unique method for adding inset circles and other curved shapes. Everyone from novice to experienced quilters will benefit from Cheryl's easy-to-learn, ingenious techniques. You'll learn circular reverse appliqué, including the option of framing your orphan blocks. Create your own templates for inset quarter-circles of varying sizes or piece half-circles in contrasting colorways for a modern look. Whether you choose appliqué, reverse appliqué, inset circles or all three methods, you’ll be thrilled that you chose this class to take your quilting skills to the next level.

Lesson Plan

Lesson 1. Circle & Curve Basics

  • Start by thinking about what makes a curve a curve. You'll review a little geometry and some tools for drawing circles.

Lesson 2. Appliqué Circles

  • Cheryl shows you how to create applique circles using templates. You'll prepare the background fabric and use machine applique to add the circles.

Lesson 3. Reverse Circles

  • Look at circles another way with the Reverse Circle technique. You'll learn to prepare the background template, cut inside the template and prepare the circle fabric before stitching the block.

Lesson 4. Inset Quarter Circles

  • Quarter circles combine elements of curves and straight lines to give your patchwork motion and impact. You'll learn how to mark the pin points, pin and stitch the quarter circles.

Lesson 5. Inset Half Circles

  • Learn how to create your templates, pin the fabric and stitch your half circles with step-by-step instruction.

Lesson 6. Playing With Circular Shapes

  • Throw your quilting a curve with these interesting shapes: kidney shapes, reverse ovals, half-square triangles combined with circles, and improv quarter circles.

Lesson 7. Design Considerations

  • Now it's time to put it all together and use all your new tools and tricks to create patchwork that will surprise and delight.

"This class has really fostered in me the freedom to work with curves and circles. The instructor is extremely knowledgeable and her relaxed manner puts me right where I need to be to handle the samples. Great instruction -- clear and concise. Thanks sew much!"
