Achieve rich textures with mediums and grounds, including nepheline gel and iridescent copper for shimmering light effects. Use mixed-media techniques that are ideal for building vibrant surfaces and rendering floral techniques, including stenciling, scumbling and color washing. You’ll even explore layering techniques using medium, to achieve translucent paint layers that recall classical oil paintings! After this class, you’ll have the skills you need to confidently create inspiring acrylic art that is cutting edge and utterly beautiful.
Learn about the various projects and techniques you’ll cover in class as you meet your instructor, Canadian artist and acrylic consultant Rhéni Tauchid.
Dive into an introduction of direct painting techniques as Tauchid walks you through the steps to create a beautiful still life. Overcome any hesitation about familiarizing (or re-familiarizing) yourself with acrylics as you loosely lay in your objects and background, adding mass, roundness, highlights and depth as you go.
Discover the joys of indirect painting techniques with Tauchid’s expert tips along the way. Work with washes to build up layers of gorgeous color in your underpainting, revealing lush undertones and complex color relationships as you go.
Taking the flower underpainting you created in Lesson 3, you’ll move on to adding glaze layers with the use of new mediums. You’ll learn how to choose between opaque, transparent and semi-opaque glazes to obtain the hues and effects that you desire. Tauchid also illustrates ways to determine how your mediums will change when they're dry, as well as how to add a new drybrush layer on top of your glazes.
Create dramatic, varied textures as you indulge your creative side with the impasto technique. Using high-viscosity paints and liquid mediums, you’ll lay in the sky and ground of an alluring abstract landscape. Tauchid shows you how to work with unusual surfaces, create a wide variety of hues and bring your art up off the page (or board) with chunky textures.
Picking up where you left off in Lesson 5, you’ll continue your impasto techniques with a variety of gel mediums. Tauchid demonstrates ways to paint ethereal and wispy clouds, utilize drybrush techniques to make the foreground pop, create delicate lines using ordinary household items and apply your final glazes.
Bring multiple textures and aesthetics together as you use stencils, paint, charcoal, polymer medium and more. You’ll love working with dimension and texture in new ways as you celebrate the endless creative possibilities of this unique, eye-popping style.
"Whether you are new to acrylics or something of an old hand, these lessons will definitely provide several 'a-ha' moments. The explanations of the different mediums is especially helpful as the plethora of them available can be daunting. Perhaps the best take-away lesson from the entire course is to have fun experimenting, let go of the idea of having to create a 'perfect' picture and just play! Very well paced and easy to follow, I am sure I will refer back to this course repeatedly."
