Lesson plan

Lesson 1. Welcome to Your FREE Mini-Class!

  • Welcome! Learn a little about how free Craftsy classes work.

Lesson 2. Introduction

  • Meet Amy Gibson, quilter, blogger and mom. She'll talk about tools, fabrics and some basic quilting techniques like the scant quarter-inch seam allowance.

Lesson 3. January: Slashed Blocks

  • Start your sampler quilt with two slashed blocks, the Asterisk and Wonky Pound Sign.

Lesson 4. February: Half-Square Triangles

  • Two different ways to make half-square triangles are on tap this month, and you'll make the Balkan Puzzle and Chunky Chevron blocks.

Lesson 5. March: Foundation Piecing

  • Foundation piecing is in the spotlight this month. Amy demonstrates the Broken Spider Web and String blocks.

Lesson 6. April: English Paper Piecing

  • This month features two techniques: appliqué and English paper piecing. Hexi Stripes and Sunny With a Chance of Hex are the two patterns you'll learn.

Lesson 7. May: Wonky Log Cabin

  • You've never seen Log Cabin blocks like this. Amy shows you the Modern Log Cabin and the Wonky 5-Sided Log Cabin to demonstrate strip piecing.

Lesson 8. June: The Modern 9-Patch

  • Eight-sided octagons take center stage this month. Learn the Greek Cross and Octagon blocks.

Lesson 9. July: Dresden Plates

  • Dresden Plates are a traditional block design that looks great with updated, bold fabrics. Amy shows two takes on Dresden, one with a pointed edge, the other wheel-shaped.

Lesson 10. August: Stars

  • Are you seeing stars? You will after you make the Ohio Star and Double Star blocks that make up this month's lesson.

Lesson 11. September: Curved Piecing

  • Curved piecing intimidates many rookie quilters. Amy takes a look at the colorfully named Drunkard's Path pattern, making the Chain and Cleopatra's Puzzle blocks.

Lesson 12. October: Paper Piecing

  • Learn paper piecing in this Block of the Month. The Friendship Circle and Circle of Geese designs are the perfect blocks to finish your sampler quilt.

Lesson 13. The Big Finish: Assembly

  • In the last five lessons, Amy will show you how to construct the quilt. Lay out your blocks into a pleasing design, stitch them together and add sashing and a border.

Lesson 14. The Big Finish: Basting

  • Your beautiful pieced top meets its batting and backing as you sandwich your quilt layers with Amy.

Lesson 15. The Big Finish: Quilting

  • Easy quilting techniques, including stitch in the ditch and charm tacks, are covered in this lesson. For more ambitious quilting designs, take a look at Leah Day's Free Motion Quilting a Sampler, which features these blocks.

Lesson 16. The Big Finish: Squaring Up

  • It's time for another adventure with the rotary cutter. Let's make sure the quilt is square before binding it.

Lesson 17. The Big Finish: Binding

  • Amy shows a straight-grain binding with mitered corners and a hand-stitched finish. Bind your edges and voila! You have a quilt! Be sure to post your photos to the Craftsy projects page.

"Amy was a great teacher and I learned way more than I imagined I would. This was my first quilt and it turned out beautifully. I feel like I gained years and years of knowledge in just a few easy-to-follow lessons. Thank you for a wonderful course. I would highly recommend this class to anyone."
