Learn it...

Sometimes a girl needs a wee bit of va-va-voom. Gretchen Hirsch - creator of Gertie's New Blog for Better Sewing - gives you the skills you need to create gorgeous dresses that fit like they're painted on, yet let you dance all night. You'll learn how to assemble and customize the included BurdaStyle dress pattern, create a muslin to check fit, and construct a highly tailored garment using some very cool techniques. In 15 high-definition video lessons, you'll learn how to make a molded bodice with underlining, boning, bust padding, a waist stay and convertible straps. The draped sarong skirt makes a beautiful contrast.

In luxurious shantung, this bustier dress exudes midcentury sophistication. Gertie says, "Think Alfred Shaheen. Think Dorothy Lamour." Make it in a tribal print for a sexy tiki vibe, butter-yellow eyelet for that Audrey Hepburn ingénue-at-a-picnic look, or ivory silk (with a fetching hat) for your wedding day. Come join the fashion fun and sign up for Sew Retro: Perfect Bombshell Dresses today!

This was such a great resource full of techniques and tips that were very helpful. Amount of detail was appropriate, without being boring!
Great teacher! Looking forward to more!

Good I learned so much  May 15, 2012

MissMarnie

I'm self taught and while I've tried to do a lot of reading up on techniques, it's always been hard to know when to put various methods into practice. Not only did I learn new techniques, how to use them and when, but it has given me a lot of confidence to deviate from patterns in a way I never had before. I really feel like I went from being a glorified novice to starting my journey towards being a more advanced sewist.

The only reason I didn't give this a solid 5 is that I haven't ...

This is a fun flirty bombshell dress. I highly recommend this class. I enjoyed it so much that I immediately sign up for the Starlet Jacket course. It was also great! I look forward to more courses Gretchen!

I am an advanced dressmaker, I always take classes to enhance my skill set. I truly enjoyed this class. It was clear, refreshing, fun and most of all very informative. Gretchen made the class, I have signed up for her jacket class and I look forward to more classes.

Excellent Please do another class Gretchen!  May 15, 2012

As a novice sewer/seamstress (I know the title is debated), I started with Diana Rupp's class, which I highly recommend and then moved on to the bombshell. Gertie does such a good job showing and explaining everything that I easily made the dress and quickly signed up for starlet jacket and now hoping she'll teach another class soon. Thanks Craftsy. I've learned so much and all thanks to you and your learning format.

Gretchen's mastery of vintage sewing techniques is superlative. She is clearly an talented teacher, and is extraordinary clear when demonstrating these techniques.

The class itself is well worth the price. It's clear, and informative, the resources are excellent.

This is the first craftsy course I signed up to.

For years I had promised to teach myself how to make a boned bodice, and kept putting it off. Not any more!

It was so fantastic to feel that there was someone with me every step of the way; there was Gretchen!! This is such a wonderful online resource for those of us that dont live where we have access to evening classes, or short courses.

I bought all my materials on line too, but felt confident from being guided ...

I signed up for this class because I became inspired to try to sew better, I looked at the preview and liked Gretchen and the way she explained 'fitting the bust' and thought that she could teach me well. I am halfway through making the dress for my daughter and am very much enjoying the process and taking my time. The online class is great as I can get back to it whenever I want. Gretchen is a very good teacher, she explains things well (I like it that she sews along and sometimes isn't ...

Good Could go into more detail about the bust fitting.  May 14, 2012

wzrdreams

I really enjoyed learning all of the sewing techniques used in this class to create this structured dress. I am certain to use these techniques again and refer back to this class for notes.

The only area that I wish it had gone into more depth was the fitting of the bust cups. I have a dress form, but it is not really great for draping on and it is not at all accurate to my body. It would be nice to see some non form draped methods for adjusting the pattern for those of us who would ...
