The first lecture from Craftsy's free QuiltCon 2013 Series is live! In "Everyday Inspiration in Modern Quilts," Heather Jones explores her muse, which she finds in surprising places, from the Walmart parking lot to the corrugated sides of a grain silo. Enjoy the QuiltCon trailer above and then watch the lecture for FREE here!
In case you missed learning about this series earlier in the week, the Craftsy production team is on site at QuiltCon to capture eight different lectures plus the awards ceremony recognizing the best work in the juried modern quilt show. Now you can enjoy the event from the comfort of your own home or easily catch any lectures you happen to miss while you're in Austin.
Stay tuned as there will be more tomorrow!
Update: The second lecture is now live. Displaying her trademark sense of humor, Craftsy instructor Angela Walters first threatens to lead "Interpretive Dance for Quilters," but ends up lecturing about "Machine Quilting for the Modern Quilt." Find out how Angela approaches surface design for contemporary quilts and get a glimpse of life behind a longarm.
Update #2: The third lecture is live! It started with a camera, a piece of foam-core ... and a dream. Photography is key to communicating any brand, large or small. In "Homemade Lifestyle Photography," David Butler explains how he creates stunning images on a budget.
Update #3: The fourth and fifth lectures are live! In her lecture, "Creating Your Unique Color Story," Amy Butler shares her inspirations in travel, nature and her home. Then delight in Jacquie Gering's reflections on being a maker in "Quilting Modern: Honoring Tradition."
Update #4: The entire series is now live! Quilty's Mary Fons talks about integrating the old(er) world of quilting with the new(er) -- and reaching and teaching beginners in the post-Home Ec era.
Enjoy the panel discussion "All About Fabric Design" to hear all about textile design from four well-known professionals in the industry: Amy Butler, Evie Ashworth, Kathy Miller and Laurie Wisbrun. Kim Kight moderates.
And make sure to see the winners of the first-ever QuiltCon juried quilt show!
Bonuses: Interviews with Rashida Coleman-Hale, one of the judges at QuiltCon, and a few people we met on the show floor.
Enjoy them all from the Quiltcon 2013 Series class page.
And now for some eye candy! We've spotted a number of trends at Quiltcon so far; one of our favorites is neon. These flashy colors are sure to inspire you.
For example we love these bright and bold neon fabrics from Andover Fabrics.
And if Michael Miller Fabrics says it's a trend, we believe it!
And since it's in Austin of course there's a Texas quilt featuring neon colors. This quilt was made by Dana Michaelsen and quilted by Craftsy instructor Angela Walters.
Another trend we've spotted is gorgeous pixel quilts featuring black and white color palettes.
Love the television show Parks and Rec? Check out this pixel quilt of Ron Swanson by Monica Solorio-Snow of Happy Zombie.
