Cat’s Corner: Happy St. Nick’s Day! & A Giveaway

Craftsy Blue Sky Alpacas Giveaway

The 6th day of December is known and celebrated in some countries as Saint Nicholas Day. Saint Nick was actually Nikolkaos of Myra, a bishop in Lycia (now Turkey), way back in the fourth century AD. He would place coins in the shoes or boots of a needy person when they weren’t looking. Eventually people began to leave their shoes out in hopes that he would put his coins in them. This is where the tradition of Christmas stockings comes from. There is also a tale of him dropping a bag of coins down a chimney to save a poor man’s daughters from having to turn to prostitution. I probably don’t need to explain how this effected our “modern day” Santa Clause traditions. There is claim that his relics (bones) produce something called “manna” or Myrrh to this very day. You can purchase it at a shop near his church in Bari, Italy if you so desire. Apparently it has miraculous properties. Regardless of your beliefs, St. Nick sounds like a really great guy, don’t you think? I think he deserves his own day of recognition, a day for all of us to give something to others in his honor or just because it feels really good to give.

On that note, giving is what I love the most about this time of year. And the lights, of course, but mostly it’s the giving part. I love to make things for people and to wrap things up in pretty packages. I love to leave little gifts for people in unexpected places. I love to send cards and make cookies. It’s so lovely to share and spread the joy of the season.

So, in honor of St. Nick, I’m giving you a chance to win one of these lovely gift sets:

Blue Sky Alpacas Val's Slouch Pattern
Blue Sky Alpacas One Cable Mitts
Spud & Chloe Goldfish Hat
Blue Sky Alpacas Frosty Cowl

There are four sets in all from Blue Sky Alpacas, the makers of  wonderfully luxurious yarns- the Cable Mit gift set, the Frosty Cowl gift set, the Slouch Cable Hat gift set and the Spud & Chloe Goldfish Hat gift set. Each set contains a pattern, the yarn needed to complete the pattern and a super-cute “Pretty Cheep” project bag. These 100% muslin bags are washable, sturdy and big enough to carry almost any project with you. All of the patterns are great for new-ish knitters and for those with more experience. Blue Sky Alpaca yarns are some of the finest in the entire yarn world. All of these sets are perfect to give as gifts or you could make the project up for someone else, or you could keep it for yourself. You decide. *wink wink*

Lantern Moon Sheep Giveaway

Lantern Moon put together a super-cute collection of all things sheep for us- the Cool Sheep Felt Keychain Clutch, the Sheep Tape Measure and a set of six hand-crocheted Sheep Stitch Markers. That’s a whole lot of sheep-goodness and the perfect gift for any knitter or sheep-lover.

I’m precisely preparing Saint Nicolas celebration in our house: I baked “Mannala” (small brioches shaped as little men) which are traditional in the East of France, where I come from. We left some hot chocolate for Saint Nick and Père Fouettard (his assistant who is known to gift a whip instead of sweets to the naughty children!) We left some carrots for Saint Nicolas’ donkey and the children are expecting their slippers to be filled with chocolates, sweets and clementines when they go to bed tonight. Happy Saint Nicolas Day everyone! And thank you for the giveaway…

Hello Clemence!

It’s so nice to hear about your celebration. It sounds lovely! I read a little about how different countries celebrate, but it was too much to put into the blog. Thanks for adding it here! It’s fascinating to me to learn about other cultures and their holidays and ways they celebrate. Happy St. Nick’s day to you! Good luck with the giveaway.

I’m having trouble entering. When I click your link it the url address shows as “http://www.craftsy.com/ext/20121206_CatsCornerGiveaway”, but it then changes to “http://www.craftsy.com/deals/knitting?restrictedActivityType=LANDING_PAGE&lpid=512″ and I end up in the knitting yarn shop. I would really love to enter the giveaway if still possible. Can you let me know if there is another link I should try?
Thanks!

Rhonda- Hmmmmmm……I am looking into the issue, but we can’t seem to recreate it on our end. When you click on the link you should have a box pop up and notify you that you are entered in the contest. Then you will be re-directed to the deals page so that you can see the items in the giveaway. This is the only link that will enter you in the contest. If you’re not a Craftsy member it should take you to a page that asks for you to register as a new user. Do you see the little orange box in the middle of your screen when you click the link?

Rhonda Rogalski

No, it’s not popping up for me. I have dial up and it can be brutally slow sometimes, so I will try it again and wait to see if it comes up. The redirect is working, since that is where it is taking me. I’ll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the timely response!
