Hello! My name is Cat and I’m the yarn buyer for Craftsy. On October 12th the Craft Yarn Council brings us “I Love Yarn Day”, a day to celebrate and share your love of yarn. I’m sure that many of you will understand when I say that I think every day is yarn day (one look at my stash which has taken over most of the living room and at least one closet will confirm this….), but I’m thrilled to have a whole day designated to one of the things on this earth that I love the most. What an amazing creation yarn is- Fibers spun together in lengths of color and texture with which we can create beautiful, warm, comforting and useful items for ourselves and others. Few things bring me more joy. In celebration I want to share with you three yarns that are near and dear to my heart:
Artyarns Ensemble Light: Rocky Mountain Moonlight
First there is Artyarns Ensemble Light. This luscious silk and cashmere yarn is one of the nicest yarns I’ve ever worked with. It’s so light and yet so warm- It’s almost magical. If you missed out on the exclusive Craftsy color, Rocky Mountain Moonlight, designed earlier this year by Iris Schreier, you’re in luck. It’s back and the fibers in Ensemble Light show it off in a new and amazing way. The silk/cashmere blend creates a two-tone effect that bring out hues that were almost invisible before. If you’ve never worked with a yarn from Artyarns, I encourage you to start with this one. If you have used Artyarns before, you already know that this is a must have for your stash. Well done, Iris. You’ve out done yourself.
Fyberspates: Faery Wings
Speaking of magic- Let’s take a little trip to the England countryside where my second yarn, Faery Wings by Fyberspates, comes from. Fyberspates is a yarn company owned and operated by Jeni Hewlett, a lovely Brit who is, in her own words, obsessed with color and the dying of fiber. She discovered the art of dying yarns while studying psychology and very quickly had so much yarn that she began selling it on Ebay before it took over her house! Now she lives on a lovely little farm where she creates and dyes yarn and occasionally gets visited in the studio by the various animals that live there with her. Her Faery Wings yarn is a lovely combination of silk, mohair and nylon- The perfect yarn for a lovely shawl or cowl. The silk gives a softness, warmth and sheen to this luscious, wavy yarn and the mohair creates a spectacular bloom- you’ll want to use it for every project that requires a little Faery magic.
Crystal Palace: Taos
Last, but certainly not least, is a wonderful little ball of yum called “Taos” from Crystal Palace. Strangely, I first discovered Crystal Palace Yarns at a little yarn shop in Taos, New Mexico on a family trip. I bought a few skeins with no project or pattern in mind, like we do, and coveted those little balls like Gollum and his Precious ring for months before I dared to work them up into a cowl. I can’t tell you how excited I am to finally be able to offer these yarns to our Craftsy customers. Taos is a 100% wool yarn spun with beautiful striations of color combinations that create tweed-like effects. It’s the perfect yarn for garments, blankets, scarves, hats, mittens and it felts beautifully! My personal favorite colorway is called “Hopi”. It reminds me of New Mexico’s enchanted desert landscapes- the perfect color for an Autumn project!
Happy Yarn Day to you! I hope you get to spend your day learning, teaching, creating or sharing your love of yarn. I’ll be at Stitches East in the Craftsy booth on I Love Yarn Day. Come by and share your favorite yarns with me!
