BERNINA DIY wedding competition

As you might already know, we recently teamed up with BERNINA to announce a brand new contest that you can enter to win a BERNINA 3 Series sewing machine! We’ve recently extended the deadline to August 8, 2012, so there’s still time to enter!

This contest is all about weddings: what to wear to a wedding, what to give as a wedding gift, decorations to adorn the ceremony and reception, and whatever wedding-themed projects you can think of.

Here’s how you can enter to win:

1. Make a wedding-themed project. You can sew it, glue it, knit or crochet it, just make sure you DIY.

2. Upload your finished project to Craftsy by August 8, 2012.

3. Include “BERNINA” somewhere in the title of your project, just so we know that it is an entry into this contest.

4. The person with the most “hearts” on Craftsy by August 10, 2012 will win a brand new BERNINA 3 series machine!

The top three runners up will win a free Craftsy class of their choice. The grand prize winner will also be featured right here on the Craftsy blog with information and images of their creative process. Good luck, we can’t wait to see what you make!

  1. Karen Perry says:

Hi, I have recently taken up sewing having not sewed for over 15 years! my first project was a dress for a wedding. I decided on the most beautiful material (silk) and the most difficult to start with as a beginnner. I also decided on a basic dress pattern which I altered to add more pleats and a colourful sash to the front bodice. I made a mock up dress first which went well and am currently on the real thing. I plan to have this finished soon and will post this as my ‘Bernina’ project. I do hope you like it and would love your comments on the end result! Thanks

  2. Nelly Jane says:

Is this competition open to we British followers?

    1. Alma Stainton says:

There are dealers in other countries, such as Canada. Could you not just send a voucher for a machine to be picked up at our local dealer? We (the aliens) help make your site a success.
I love your site and visit it often.

      1. Megan says:

        Hi Alma,

We’ve been in contact with BERNINA about this question specifically. Hopefully we’ll hear something soon!

        My best,

  3. suzanne weidie says:

This looks like an interesting project. When and where will the contestant’s projects be online?

  4. suzanne weidie says:

Thanks, I just re-read the entry form and saw the answers to my questions. suz

  5. Claudia Burns says:

I would LOVE to have a Bernina!

  6. Rachell r says:

Does it have to be made right now? Or something older be entered? I made my own wedding dress and my sister in law’s wedding dress; it’s been just a few years.

    1. Rebecca says:

      Hi Rachell,

Feel free to enter your wedding dresses! The project doesn’t need to be made specifically for this contest so you can most certainly enter something that you’ve made in the past. Let us know if you have any other questions!

  7. Marie Maurer says:

I would love to own a Bernina Sewing Machine. I envy my friends who are lucky enough to own one.

  8. Jessica Geissinger says:

Can I enter a beaded headband or do it have to be fabric?

    1. Rebecca says:

      Hi Jessica,

You can absolutely enter your beaded headband. Looking forward to seeing it! If you have any other questions, let us know!

  9. Dee Dee Shaver says:

Can it be Cross Stitched. I crossed stitched my mom and dad’s a fifity wedding annverity piece. They both passed away. But it was a beautiful piece.
    Dee Dee

    1. Rebecca says:

      Hi Dee Dee,

Absolutely! As long as its DIY, you can enter it in the contest. Let us know if we can help you with anything else!

    2. Rebecca says:

      Hi Dee Dee,

I just spoke with the coordinator for this contest and unfortunately we are only allowing projects directly associated with the actual wedding, and not a wedding anniversary. I am so sorry for the inconvenience and the error on my part. This is totally my fault for okaying your project. Once again, I apologize for this misunderstanding. Luckily, you have until August 8th to upload your finished project so there is still time. I really hope that you still enter something directly related to the actual wedding.

      My Sincerest Apologies,

  10. Justine Ebio says:

Can enter a dress I made for my daughter’s 1st holy communion ? I made it with this soft luxurious fabric – it’s white and can be worn by flower girls.

    1. Rebecca says:

      Hi Justine,

For this particular contest, the project needs to be made for a wedding or have been used at a wedding. Let us know if you have any additional questions!

  11. Alethia says:

Is there a limit to how many entries you can have?

    1. Rebecca says:

      Hi Alethia,

Nope! There is no limit to the amount of entries you can have. Hope this helps!

  12. Stayce Richardson says:

Ok I just clicked on this site and need to know and I’m sure it’s a stupid question but what is DIY?

    1. Megan says:

      Hi Stayce,

DIY means do it yourself, so the projects you enter for this competition must be made by you.

Let us know if you have any other questions!

      My best,

  13. mary mapel says:

can we see the current entries and how do you vote?

    1. Rebecca says:

      Hi Mary,

You can view all the entries here:

To vote, just click the heart on the specific project you’d like to vote for. Whoever has the most hearts wins!

If you have any other questions, let us know!

  14. Linda Cook says:

The entry instruction says ‘upload’, does that mean a picture, pattern, or what?

    1. Megan says:

      Hi Linda,

Follow the instructions to upload your project onto the Craftsy site. You don’t need to upload the pattern, just photos of your project and a bit of information about it. Let us know if you have any other questions!

      My best,

  15. Marjorie Guth says:

i will be making my granddaughter’s wedding veil but haven’t received the material as yet, hope it, gets here begfore the deadline and I can get it done. It will be made on my Bernia which is getting quite old now. I bought in the 70′s and still sews well.

  16. Can those of us living outside the States, eg. South Africa, still enter for a chance to win one of the runner’s-up prizes of a free Craftsy class?

    1. Rebecca says:

      Hi Ingrid,

Of course! We can gift Craftsy classes to anyone anywhere in the world, so please feel free to enter!

  17. patricia says:

Hi. I was wondering the same thing as Rachel R. So, it can be things we have designed and used in past weddings? Does it have to be specifically for the wedding or can we enter projects we did for reception or bridal shower. And lastly, how many projects may we enter? My daughter’s wedding was a year and a half ago and I did whatever I could myself to cut down on costs, so I have several projects in mind! Would love love love to have a Bernina! Would love to have a computerized machine of any type! Have only a used Janome mechanical, but, hey it works great so I cant justify spending $ on a new machine computerized or not! Just can’t, but winning one I could totally appreciate. Lol!

    1. Rebecca says:

      Hi Patricia,

Yes your project can definitely be things that you have designed in the past, this includes both items specifically for the ceremony, as well as projects for the reception, bridal shower, etc. As long as its DIY and has a wedding theme, it can be entered in the contest. In addition, you can most certainly enter multiple projects. Just make sure that they all have “BERNINA” in the title. If you have any more questions, let us know! We are always more than happy to help!

  18. Patricia says:

Since you can ship only in the US, what if I am an international member with a US address. Will I be eligible

    1. Rebecca says:

      Hi Patricia,

When BERNINA gives away a machine, they organize a pick up and training with the winner’s local dealer. So they don’t ship the winner a machine, the winner picks it up at their local dealer. If you have a US address, BERNINA can use it to locate your nearest dealer. You would still need to have the availability to pick it up 2 – 3 weeks after the contest. Does that make sense? I know it is a bit confusing, so if you have any other questions at all, please let us know!

  19. Aimee K says:

Can it be a painting? I did a painting/drawing with a lot intricate Celtic knot work for a friends wedding. Thanks!

    1. Rebecca says:

      Hi Aimee,

Yes, it can be a painting. Just be sure that it conveys the concept of DIY Wedding. In addition, your project should have been used in a wedding, which in this case it sounds like it was. If you have any other questions, let us know!

  20. Laura says:

What an awesome prize to win. I’m sure many would love to win a great sewing machine like a “Bernina”

Unfortunately, I reside in Canada and do not qualify because shipping is only for the U.S.

Perhaps if they would give the option of the “winner” to pay the additional shipping costs to their destination, All Craftsy Members would get a chance.

It’s as simple as; Winner does not want to pay additional shipping costs, first runner up would have the option if they reside outside of the U.S.A.

Would I pay the additional shipping costs if I won a “Bernina” sewing machine?…you bet!

    Just saying.

    1. Rebecca says:

      Hi Laura,

Thank you for your wonderful suggestion. I have forwarded it to the appropriate individual at Craftsy. If anything changes in regards to this contest, we will be sure to post it on the blog. Thanks again!

  21. Linda says:

I have two projects I have made regarding my wedding (1/27/84). Are we limited to one project? With regard to uploading a photo, will we be able to show more than one photo on each project?

    This is a great idea!

    1. Rebecca says:

      Hi Linda,

You can enter as many projects as you’d like. And yes, you will be able to show more than one photo on each project. Let us know if you have any additional questions!

  22. Sara says:

Do you have a list of official rules? I have something I would like to submit but want to make sure I am eligible.

    1. Rebecca says:

      Hi Sara,

Here is a link to the official rules:

  23. Rosemary says:

I have a quilt I made from my daughter’s wedding that I used pictures, signed comments from people who attended and embroidery of the invitation. I finished it and gave it to her for her birthday last November. Can I still enter it?

    1. Rebecca says:

      Hi Rosemary,

That sounds like such a wonderful birthday present! Because it is DIY and wedding themed, you can enter it for this contest. Let us know if you have any additional questions!

  24. Mantie says:

This sounds like a wonderful contest. Thank you for inviting me to enter.

  25. Jack Hoggatt says:

Are there official rules posted somewhere? I am wondering if we vote for just one entry. If so, then it seems like voting should only happen after all the entries are presented… I made a pieced and tied quilt medallion that I attached to a purchased “quilt” for my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. Is that “wedding themed” enough to enter? I LOVE CRAFTSY!!

    1. Rebecca says:

      Hi Jack,

The official rules are posted here:

You can vote for as many entries as you’d like! There is no limit on voting. In regards to the project, it needs to be directly related to the actual wedding in order to be entered, so unfortunately an anniversary present wouldn’t count for this specific contest. However, the deadline for this contest is August 8th, so the good thing is, you still have time to create a different project! If we can help you with anything else, please let us know! We’re happy to answer any and all questions!

  26. Doreen says:

This sounds very good to enter as I do like to sew a lot.

  27. Jane says:

I entered the contest yesterday and finally saw my entry this morning. However, I am unable to find my entry now unless I go to my personal profile page. It seems that everytime I do a search for “Bernina Wedding Dress” or even just Bernina I come up with the same projects and it doesn’t include mine. What am I doing wrong? A few of my friends have also told me they are unable to find my entry. Also, as I scroll through the pages in the projects, several of the entries seem to show up on multiple pages. My entry is “Bernina Wedding Dress” and the caption of the picture is “cascade of ruffles”. I can’t even find it when I use the picture caption as my search criteria. Any suggestions?

    1. Rebecca says:

      Hi Jane,

I’m not totally sure of the issue that you are having. I did a search for your project and located it. Perhaps there was a glich in the system that has now been fixed. Regardless, your entry most certainly comes up now so worry not!

      Here are the search results:

      Here is you entry:

If you have any other questions, let us know!

  28. oh how i would love to have a nice machine, my next craft will be to learn to sew! oh this would be so fabulous!

  29. Flaun says:

I’m having the same issue Jane had. I’ve made my entry, but it isn’t coming up when I search for BERNINA. I also tried to edit the title of my entry, but it reverts back every time I try to publish the change.

    1. Rebecca says:

      Hi Flaun,

I can get this issue sorted for you. What is the name of your entry?

      1. Flaun says:

        “White Wedding BERNINA entry”

The title change isn’t important, I guess, I just wanted to make sure it could be found in the contest search results. If the above works, that’s okay by me! (White Wedding is what I named the piece.)

        1. Rebecca says:

We’re looking into this issue now and will get back to you as soon as we figure it out. I apologize for the inconvenience!

          1. Flaun says:

I see it in the batch, now. Thanks!

  30. jennifer winters says:

i would love this machine, i have made a small dress from a wedding dress. i don’t know how to post it.

    1. Rebecca says:

      Hi Jennifer,

You can upload your project at this link:

Just make sure you have “BERNINA” somewhere in the title! If you have any other questions, let us know!

  31. DeVina says:

When I try to add photos, I keep receiving an error 302. It will not let me load any of my pics for this contest. Is there a size limit for pictures that I may not be aware of?

    1. Rebecca says:

      Hi DeVina,

I forwarded your question to Customer Support, so if they haven’t gotten back to you yet, they will shortly. If we can help you with anything else, let us know!

      1. QuiltyReese says:

I am currently getting the same error. Any way to fix it?

        1. Support says:

When looking at the web address, if the URL reads https:// at the beginning, can you remove the “S” from the URL? In some cases we’ve seen some browsers switch between these two URL’s (http and https) which causes our system to think you are starting a new session and need to login again. Since we don’t recognize you as logged in, the photo upload might error.

For example, if the address reads:, you will need to change it to

The good news is we’re working on a way to automate this process since we’ve heard from a few other folks that they are also experiencing this same issue. We hope to have this in place very soon. In the meantime, I’d give this manual fix a try. If you still have trouble please email us at

  32. Rosemary says:

HELP! I uploaded my entry, but cannot find the URL for the contest so I can post to FB and get friends to vote.

    1. Rebecca says:

      Hi Rosemary,

What is the title of your entry? I’m going to try to help get your situation sorted out, and if I cannot get it sorted, I will recruit someone else at Craftsy to help! Thanks!

  33. Luke says:

Is it possible for people from outside of US to specify an address/person that lives in US (a relative for example) to send the machine to in case of winning the competition?

    1. Rebecca says:

      Hi Luke,

When BERNINA gives away a machine, they organize a pick up and training with the winner’s local dealer. So they don’t ship the winner a machine, the winner picks it up at their local dealer. If you have a US address, BERNINA can use that address to locate your nearest dealer. You (or your relative) would still need to have the availability to pick it up 2 – 3 weeks after the contest. Does that make sense? I know its a bit confusing, so if you have any additional questions, please feel free to post again!

  34. Deb says:

I have a DIY project I am currently making for my daughter’s wedding. However, I did ‘borrow’ the idea from a DIY website. Am I allowed to submit that?

    1. Megan says:

      Hi Deb,

Yes, you can submit your project, as long as you made it yourself!

      My best,

  35. Dolores Merritt says:

Can we enter if project is in progress?
Iam hand quilting a quilt for our Granddaughters wedding in Oct. Which is on our 50th anniversar. The lace around each heart is off of my wedding gown.

    1. Support says:

Hi Dolores – To qualify for the contest your project will need to be completed. Thanks for participating and good luck!

  36. Gail Rodman says:

A few years ago I just “had to have” a sewing machine!!!! I learned how to use it made
Several things (apron, towels,) now, 50 + years later I’m having difficulty threading the machine. I’m usually good at reading and following the directions. Not this time. I want to sew so bad; I need furniture covers, rugs, etc. I believe that the
New machine will make things easier. Thank you very much for this wonderful new machine!!!

  37. Gail Rodman says:

I am so looking forward to receiving my new sewing machine. Quiz zillion ideas are raining in my mind. I’ll be thinking of all the things I will be making for everyone. Yippee thank you so much. I hope I live long enough to make everything
I think of to make and give.

  38. Laura says:

When do all the hearts have to be in to be counted?

    1. Rebecca says:

      Hi Laura,

We will be tallying hearts at noon today Mountain Standard Time. Good luck!!

      1. Laura says:

        Thank you. :)
There are some of us that were a little confused because of voting deadline being by the 10th, we thought. ;(
