I am in love with Knitting Plus: Mastering Fit + Plus-size style + 15 projects by Lisa Shroyer. I’m a size 12 – 14 myself, and tall, about 5’10”, so though I don’t often knit from patterns, when I do I have to make changes. Lots of them.
Fortunately for me, I just make it into size range for some of the projects in this book. Let me tell you, I’ve never been so happy to be a (somewhat) plus-sized knitter! The whole front section of the book is filled with designer tips on how to knit for plus sizes. Things like how to choose a size, where you might need to adapt the shaping, and what sweater elements will look good on your body type.
One of my favorite designs is by Craftsy member (and future Craftsy instructor) Marlaina Bird. She designed the Barton Cardigan pictured below.
Another one of my faves is the lacy Missimer Pullover:
This book is great not only as a collections of plus-sized patterns, but also as a reference book for how to adapt patterns and fit larger sizes. To learn more about the book and its author, check out the Knitpicks podcast interview with Lisa Shroyer.
To learn more about fitting your knits, take a look at my new online knitting class, Knit Lab: Fit Your Knits. In this class, we walk through how to customize any pattern’s shaping, add bust darts, and alter armholes for a perfect fit. Though we don’t address specific plus-sized issues, if you are “borderline plus” like me, you’ll find a lot here that speaks to you!
