Book Review:
I am in love with Knitting Plus: Mastering Fit + Plus-size style + 15 projects by Lisa Shroyer. I’m a size 12 – 14 myself, and tall, about 5’10″, so though I don’t often knit from patterns, when I do I have to make changes. Lots of them.

Fortunately for me, I just make it into size range for some of the projects in this book. Let me tell you, I’ve never been so happy to be a (somewhat) plus-sized knitter!  The whole front section of the book is filled with designer tips on how to knit for plus sizes.  Things like how to choose a size, where you might need to adapt the shaping, and what sweater elements will look good on your body type.

One of my favorite designs is by Craftsy member (and future Craftsy instructor) Marlaina Bird. She designed the Barton Cardigan pictured below.

Another one of my faves is the lacy Missimer Pullover:

This book is great not only as a collections of plus-sized patterns, but also as a reference book for how to adapt patterns and fit larger sizes.  To learn more about the book and its author, check out the Knitpicks podcast interview with Lisa Shroyer.

To learn more about fitting your knits, take a look at my new online knitting class, Knit Lab: Fit Your Knits.  In this class, we walk through how to customize any pattern’s shaping, add bust darts, and alter armholes for a perfect fit.  Though we don’t address specific plus-sized issues, if you are “borderline plus” like me, you’ll find a lot here that speaks to you!

As a special treat for you, we’re giving away a copy of Knitting Plus: Mastering Fit + Plus-size style + 15 projects.  To enter, all you have to do is leave a comment to this blog post, and we’ll choose a winner at random next week.

The Rules: Only one entry per person, and you must be a Craftsy member to win. So, before you post a comment, make sure to Click Here to Join Craftsy!

I would love to win this book. I collect projects for a hobby (LOL). Actually I get so excited about a new project that I often time start it and then excited about something else I want to knit. I made a resolution to finish 6 projects I had started before I start something new. I am on my 6th project — ready to look for something new to staryt.

Thank you for the opportunity to win a copy of this book! It’s so exciting to see a couple of the projects in the book… I, too, fit into the category of being a size 14. I haven’t knit a garment in a long while so this would be the perfect chance to give it another try!

Wow. Those designs look really awesome. I am always looking for help on how to adjust patterns to fit me.

I’m a relatively new knitter and am intimidated by starting to knit clothes since I’ve read about the horror stories of having to make so many alterations to patterns to fit plus-sized bodies like mine.

Wow…. finally a book with plus size patterns. :-) I learned to Crochet and Knit when I was about 11 or 12 and have just gotten back into both… this is something that I will be getting for my own craft library.

What a wonderful idea for a book and it’s just about time too. For those of us that are taller than average, or bustier than average, or want to make a gift for someone that is, patterns are so hard to find, and the calculations leave a million places for errors – this book will be a gift from above and what wonderful patterns!!!

I am a novice plus-sized knitter and have hesitated getting into knitting garments for myself because I’m never sure how they are going to fit. This book looks awesome, and if I don’t win it I’m going to buy it! I absolutely love the photo of the Barton cardigan… once I figure out how to do cables! ;-)

Both of my daughters are plus size women and I have never knitted any type of garment for either of them, only purses and scarves. I have always been afraid to attempt a project like sweaters because of not knowing how to adjust the fit, which is why I have been interested in this new book Knitting Plus.

I think it would be a helpful addition to my library.

Like you, I don’t fit into the “Normal Women’s sizes”… I’m too big to shop in the regular clothing stores and too small to shop in the PLUS size shops. (I’m 5’8″ tall and also wear a size 14).

I’m looking forward to reading your book. I’d love to learn how to adapt patters for my size.

Thank you!

I’m excited about this book. As a plus sized knitter, having the knowledge of how to adapt a pattern to fit me opens the door for so many more knitting fashion options. I don’t always like the patterns available for plus sizes and didn’t know how to adjust a pattern. I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

I have looked around for something like this. It seems many patterns are not suited for my body type. Wider shoulders, ponch in the front, not much in the back. I would love to have a copy of this book. I’m sure there’s plenty I could learn from it, and hopefully make something beautiful for myself for a change. Something like the Barton Cardigan! pretty.

I have never knit a sweater for myself because I have never found a pattern that I liked that had instructions for my size. I am by no means an expert knitter and I don’t know how to adjust a pattern to fit me. How wonderful to see someone do that for me in this book! The patterns you have shown look absolutely beautiful. This would be an excellent purchase for me. I would knit every pattern in this book! Love it and thank you for informing all us plus size knitters!

The sample pics of patterns are fascinating!! And the theme is perfect for high north regions….not a lot of sunbathers up my way….lol. I can think of tons of knitters up here who would love such a book in their collections. I wonder what they’ll trade me for?? eventually, that is.

What a terrific book this would be to add to my collection! I’m a plus-sized gal myself, as are a lot of my friends, and I’ve often given up on knitting a pattern that I loved because I knew the largest size wouldn’t fit me or the person I wanted to knit it for. I’m positively drooling over that beautiful cardigan with all the cables on it.

I live in Portugal where I came to settle in 1986. I am originally from Hongkong so, I only know how to follow patterns written in English. I am a Top Size 14, Waist and Hips, Size 16 and I am 1,70m. Mediterranean women seem to have a shorter bodice then mine so I have trouble with body length and my “boobs” are just “B”. A tailoring of shape will be a great help so, I do hope I get this book.

There is some really good information in this book. I know I have borrowed it from my library several times. While I find the “humor” a bit too rough at times, the message is still valid. I would really love to have a copy since it is such a valuable tool… and the patterns are adorable.

The average size of women in North America is not size 2! With creative people and designers who understand that most of us are very curvy and luscious, then more women can wear beautiful clothing. Designing for the ample body just means taking a bit more time to think about how to give a Rubenesque figure something flattering. Why can’t a BBW (Big Beautiful Woman) have everything? I would love to win the book!

That Barton cardigan is amazing…I love the way it skims the figure, vertical lines..so many plus size sweaters are meant for apple shapes, leaving us pear shape knitters swimming at the top and too tight at the hip. That would be the first project on my needles if I were fortunate enough to win this book. Thank you!
